Homework:

  • Complete the Summary section of ALL of your Cornell Notes today.
  • Complete your Dialectical Journal for "Gift of the Magi"

Introductions and class expectations: Mr. Devine will explain what you will be expected to do, classroom procedures, attendance and other information you will need to successfully complete this class for credit.
  • Keep Cornell Notes. (Always title your pages properly)
  • Review Cornell Notes.
  • Complete the Summary for homework.

Elements of a Short Story:

Reading Section 3/1/10: Short Story Notes, Glencoe Lit p. 2-3: In groups of 3 or 4, take Cornell Notes on short story elements. Have students share notes on Elmo and add missing information where necessary.
  • Complete the Summary section of your Cornell Notes at home.

Reading Section 3/1/10: Scan for Vocabulary Glencoe Lit p. 6-13: Work in pairs to list the words you do not know, define them in easy English. Define ALL of the words you don't know.

Speaking Section 3/1/10: Active Reading Strategies, Glencoe Lit p. 4-5
: Break class into 7 groups and assign each group a reading strategy. Supply each with a sheet of paper to create a visual chart. Have groups present their strategy to the class using the ELMO. Post the strategies to use during reading of short stories.

Grammar: Nouns and Pronouns

Writing Section 3/1/10: Reading Focus Quick Write:
  • Respond to the following quote by author George Eliot:
    • "One must be poor to know the luxury of giving".
    • What do you think it means? Do you agree?
    • You have 3 minutes to write your response.
    • Turn to a partner and share your response.
    • Keep this in mind as we read "Gift of the Magi".

Reading Section 3/1/10: Graphic Organizer for "Gift of the Magi":
  • Work in Groups of 3 to 4
  • Create "diamond organizer" to use while reading/listening to "Gift of the Magi" (Audio) to reflect on key decisions or actions of the characters and how they affect the outcome of the story .
    • Write author and title in the middle diamond.
    • For square 1. Key Decision or Action
    • 2. Pros and Cons of the Decision or Action
    • 3. What I Would Have Done
    • 4. How the Story Would Change

Reading Section 3/1/10: Summary Sentences "Gift of the Magi", Glencoe Lit p. 6-13:
  • Use your scan for vocabulary to read the story again in your groups.
  • Stop to write summary sentences after each paragraph, or paragraph grouping.
  • Write these summaries in Cornell Note style.
